Government has called on members of the public to uphold peace during elections, stating that continued peace in the country acts as an asset in promoting investor confidence and economic development.

Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, says that his ministry is committed to ensuring continued peace that can be exported to other countries in leadership and peace keeping missions.

Mr Haamundu added that despite crowd management falling under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, the Ministry of Defence has its services on standby, should they be called upon due to a situation that demands their attention.

“We must continue to maintain the peace of our country, because like I said, it is the foundation for economic and social development,” he said.

Mr Haamaundu has since appealed to members of the public to refrain from the temptation of wanting to cause violence, as they remain as key stakeholders of championing peace in the country.

He said that the government will work with a government approach that will involve key collaborations with stakeholders such as correctional services and immigration, in order to maximize peace.

Mr Haamaundu expressed that he is hopeful of a peaceful environment as the people go about casting their votes and that individuals who want to cause unnecessary trouble will be dealt with accordingly.
