UPND Loyalist Joe Muchindu has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for securing over US$2.4 billion in investment agreements during his just-ended working visit to the United Arab Emirates.

Muchindu, speaking shortly after his arrival from Nairobi, Kenya at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) today, described the President’s trip to Abu Dhabi as a clear demonstration of focused, results-driven leadership anchored on the Grow Zambia Agenda.

The agreements, signed at the Zambia-UAE Business Forum in Abu Dhabi, include a US$2 billion Medical City near KKIA, logistics and ports development, and partnerships in mining value addition, energy, agriculture, real estate and technology.

Muchindu said the deals prove that President Hichilema’s foreign trips are not ceremonial but strategic.

“President Hichilema has shown once again that he understands where Zambia needs to go. You don’t attract US$2.4 billion by sitting in Lusaka. You go out, you pitch Zambia, you convince investors that Zambia is safe, stable and ready for business. This is economic diplomacy at its best,” Muchindu said.

Muchindu noted that the proposed Lusaka Medical City which will house a National Paediatric Cardiac Centre, Renal Transplant Centre, oncology and robotic surgery facilities, will not only save foreign exchange spent on medical evacuations but position Zambia as a regional health tourism hub.

“We commend President Hichilema for these private investments with no financial obligation on government. That is smart leadership. We need investment that creates jobs, transfers technology and grows our economy without burdening the taxpayer,” he said.

He urged Zambians to support the President’s drive to double the size of the economy and called on the private sector to seize the opportunities created.

“The President has opened the door in the UAE, it is now up to Zambian businesses, youths and professionals to walk through it. Let’s rally behind this vision and grow Zambia together,” Muchindu added.

President Hichilema returned to the country yesterday from a state visit at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
