SPEAKER of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti has been re-elected unopposed as Speaker of the First Session of the 14th National Assembly.

Mutti, Zambia’s first female Speaker and a Lusaka-based lawyer, was declared duly elected after her nomination went through unopposed. She first assumed office on Sept. 3, 2021, as the 7th Speaker of the National Assembly.

The House will now have 226 constituency members, up from 156, following the enactment of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025, which introduced 40 proportional representation seats — 20 women, 15 youths and five persons with disabilities — in addition to presidential nominees.

Mutti, a former president of the Law Association of Zambia and former chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2002 to 2006, also serves as vice president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union following her election in 2025.
