A total of 229 votes were cast, with five ballots rejected, according to official results announced at the First Sitting of the First Session of the 14th National Assembly.
Muzungu, who was elected as an independent, succeeds Moses Moyo. The Second Deputy Speaker is elected from among elected members under Article 82 of the Constitution.
Meanwhile, Nelly Butete Kashumba Mutti and Attractor Malungo Chisangano have been elected Speaker and First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, respectively, after going through unopposed.
Mutti retains her position as the country’s first woman Speaker, a position she has held since 2021. Chisangano also retains her position as First Deputy Speaker.
The election of the three presiding officers paves the way for the official opening of the 14th National Assembly, which now comprises 226 constituency seats following delimitation under the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025.
