Zambia has opened talks with an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission on a successor programme under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

Government is seeking to build on restored macroeconomic stability while accelerating investment, exports, economic diversification and job creation.

The IMF mission, led by Edward Gemayel, has started engagements with Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane in Lusaka.

Mr. Gemayel said the successor programme will help preserve Zambia’s macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while aligning with the Grow Zambia Agenda.

And Dr. Musokotwane said Zambia will maintain fiscal and macroeconomic stability while placing greater emphasis on growth, investment and employment.

The Minister said employment, particularly among young people, remains a major challenge, making stronger investment and sustained economic growth critical.

Dr. Musokotwane said the envisioned growth strategy rests on four key areas: export-led growth, foreign direct investment, human capital development, and a stronger regulatory and governance environment.

The IMF mission will also hold discussions with other public institutions, including the Bank of Zambia, Zambia Revenue Authority and other relevant institutions.

The discussions will focus on economic and structural policy issues that will anchor the proposed programme, including the 2027 National Budget and the 2027–2029 Medium-Term Budget Plan.

The successor programme is expected to build on the stability achieved under the previous ECF arrangement, with greater emphasis on sustainable and inclusive growth, private-sector-led development and export-oriented expansion.

This is according to a statement availed to ZNBC News today in Lusaka by the Ministry of Finance.
