ELEVEN people have died of cholera in seven districts across five provinces, with 304 cases reported as of Sept. 29, 2026.

Acting Minister of Health Gilbert Siame said 62 of the 304 cases have been laboratory-confirmed, while 35 patients were currently receiving treatment and 230 have been discharged. Siame said eight of the 11 deaths occurred in communities, while three occurred in health facilities. The affected districts are Lusaka, Chilanga and Chongwe in Lusaka Province; Chibombo in Central Province; Chiengi in Luapula Province; Nsama in Northern Province; and Chikankata in Southern Province. He said the Ministry of Health, through the Zambia National Public Health Institute, continued to monitor cholera reports from affected districts and coordinate the national response with provincial and district health teams. Siame said the eight community deaths were particularly concerning, as they indicated delays in seeking treatment by affected communities. “The overall reported facility case-fatality ratio stands at 0.98 per cent, which reflects good patient care once patients seek care early,” he said.
