ZESCO Limited has explained the power disruption that stopped play for 18 minutes during Zambia’s 2-0 win over Togo at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

In a media statement issued today, ZESCO says the power disturbance occurred at 18:21 hours and lasted only 0.2 seconds.

However, the utility says the stadium’s floodlights require about 20 minutes to return to full brightness after a power disturbance due to their design.

“ZESCO Limited acknowledges the power disturbance during the Zambia vs Togo match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium last night. The disturbance occurred at 18:21 hours and lasted 0.2 seconds. However, the design of the affected stadium floodlights requires approximately 20 minutes for them to return to full brightness after a power disturbance,” the power utility stated.

ZESCO says it will engage the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts to redesign the stadium’s lighting system to prevent future disruptions.

“ZESCO will engage the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts to look into redesigning the stadium’s lighting system to minimise the risk of similar disruptions during future matches.”

ZESCO has also congratulated the Chipolopolo Boys on their victory.
