UPND accuses Mundubile of politicising Solwezi incident before police conclude investigations

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has accused National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile of attempting to politicise an alleged altercation involving musicians in Solwezi before police have concluded their investigations.

UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe said Mr Mundubile’s public statements amounted to prejudging the matter and risked undermining the constitutional mandate of the Zambia Police Service to investigate criminal allegations independently and without political interference.

The remarks follow Mr Mundubile’s claims linking President Hakainde Hichilema and the ruling UPND to the reported incident in Solwezi, allegations the governing party has dismissed as unfounded and politically motivated.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, Mr Simuuwe said the opposition leader was seeking to exploit an incident that remains under active police investigation.

“Facing the overwhelming momentum of President Hakainde Hichilema’s nationwide campaign, a panicked opposition has realised that defeat is imminent and is resorting to manufacturing lies and desperate tactics. Zambia is a nation of laws. Let the police execute their constitutional mandate without political interference or pressure,” Mr Simuuwe said.

He maintained that the UPND government had dismantled political cadreism and violence in public spaces and did not shield individuals suspected of committing criminal offences, regardless of political affiliation.

Mr Simuuwe urged the Zambia Police Service in North-Western Province to carry out a thorough, professional and impartial investigation to establish the facts surrounding the reported altercation.

He also challenged Mr Mundubile to hand over any evidence in his possession to investigators instead of litigating the matter through public statements.

“Mr Mundubile asserts that his party possesses video footage identifying the alleged perpetrators. If he is sincere about seeking justice rather than orchestrating a political stunt, we challenge him to immediately submit this unedited footage directly to the police,” he said.

Mr Simuuwe said pursuing the matter through social media before investigations were complete risked undermining due process and inflaming political tensions at a time when the country was preparing for the August 13 general election.

He further defended the constitutional rights of artists, musicians and performers to freely associate with any political party or movement without intimidation, harassment or violence.

According to the UPND, attempts to implicate President Hichilema in isolated incidents ignored the Head of State’s repeated calls for peaceful campaigns and his consistent instructions to party members and security agencies to uphold law, order and democratic discipline throughout the election period.

Mr Simuuwe said assigning blame before police establish the facts served neither justice nor the public interest, adding that political leaders should allow law enforcement agencies to discharge their constitutional responsibilities independently.

He urged all political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than exploit unverified incidents for political gain, saying Zambians expected leaders to present practical solutions to the country’s challenges instead of heightening political tensions through speculation.

“UPND remains committed to a peaceful, issue-based campaign and calls on all stakeholders to safeguard the peace and unity that Zambia is known for,” Mr Simuuwe said.

He added that since assuming office, President Hichilema’s administration had taken deliberate steps to eliminate political violence and restore law and order, reaffirming the government’s commitment to peaceful democratic engagement.

Police have already opened investigations into the reported Solwezi incident, with authorities expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged altercation before determining whether any criminal offences were committed.
