Iranian Lawmakers Push for Nuclear Weapons Test

Iranian lawmakers are reportedly preparing a tripartite legislative proposal calling for the country to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and move toward conducting a nuclear weapons test.

Iranian MP Haji-Deligani has reportedly called for a nuclear weapons test to be carried out as soon as possible, arguing that Iran needs nuclear deterrence capabilities to counter its enemies.

The proposed legislation follows an initiative submitted to Iran’s parliament on August 21, which called for withdrawal from the NPT amid growing international pressure over Tehran’s nuclear program and the referral of the issue to the United Nations Security Council.

Haji-Deligani has also accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of being an untrustworthy organization, alleging that sensitive Iranian information was shared with hostile parties. He linked the alleged disclosures to attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

If approved, the proposal could trigger a new escalation between Iran and Western countries over Tehran’s nuclear activities and international nonproliferation efforts.

The reported initiative does not mean Iran has decided to conduct a nuclear weapons test.
