Application preparation
A welding CV needs to distinguish training, supervised practice and work you have performed competently in employment. “All welding” is not a useful description when a vacancy specifies a process, material or qualification. Use this guide to organise evidence for welding jobs in Zambia. It is not a welding procedure, safety course or substitute for a practical assessment.
Read the technical requirements carefully
Record the advertised process, materials, job setting and requested qualification. A fabrication role, maintenance role and specialist coded-welding role can require different evidence. Do not assume that experience on one process or material establishes competence on another.
Copy certificate titles accurately, including issuer, date and any stated scope. If a qualification has conditions, expiry or renewal requirements, check them with the issuing body and the employer. Avoid describing yourself as currently certified based on an old document you have not checked.
Build a truthful work-experience register
For each relevant role or training placement, list the dates, setting, process used, material type, task and level of supervision. Explain whether you prepared work, performed welding, assisted a qualified tradesperson or supported inspection records. Do not attribute inspection approval or engineering sign-off to yourself unless you actually held that responsibility.
Use a concise example of a completed assignment with the work instruction reference and your contribution, omitting confidential details. If you cannot share project photographs, a written explanation of your role can still be useful. Get permission before publishing workplace images or drawings.
Prepare a documentation sample
Create a fictional work record containing job reference, date, assigned task, applicable instruction, supervisor and completion status. Add fields for an issue identified and the person notified. This demonstrates that you can record work clearly; it does not certify a weld or establish that a procedure is technically suitable.
Include an example in which a required instruction is missing. The sensible response is to stop and seek clarification through the authorised supervisor, not invent settings or proceed from memory. Employers assess judgement as well as manual skill.
Approach a practical test safely
Ask the recruiting employer what assessment is required, what documents to bring and who will supervise. Follow the site's induction, safety controls and approved instructions. Do not practise hazardous work without appropriate training, equipment and supervision because an online vacancy mentions a test.
Be ready to explain the limits of your experience. If you have only practised a process during training, state that rather than claiming independent production experience. Describe a time you reported a defect or uncertainty promptly and followed the responsible person's instruction.
Submit a focused trade CV
Place the most relevant process and task evidence near the top. Separate welding from related fitting or fabrication skills and avoid unsupported production-rate claims. Include availability and location accurately. Check the current employer advert for submission details; a mining job search can also return unrelated technical positions.
Keep original certificates secure and send copies only through the verified recruitment route when requested. Retain the vacancy reference and submission confirmation so that a later assessment invitation can be checked against your application.
