Mundubile pledges to restore ministry of chiefs, as Milupi accuses him of dishonest campaigning

National Restoration and Progressive Union Party presidential candidate Brian Mundubile says he will restore the ministry of chiefs and traditional affairs to address the declining recognition of traditional leaders in the political space.

Speaking during a courtesy call on acting Chief Musele at Kasisa Palace, Mr Mundubile said his government, if elected, would ensure traditional leaders are paid royalties from minerals extracted in their chiefdoms.

“When we go to an area, before we do any activities, we make sure that we pay homage to the traditional leaders. We do that because we have seen some declining recognition of our traditions and indeed, especially in the political space, so we want to make sure that we keep the tradition because that’s who we are,” he said.

Mr Mundubile said mining companies should improve the welfare of miners. He said royalty is paid to chiefdoms where these resources are extracted, and traditional leaders together with citizens, through a trust, will begin to develop their areas.

He said mining companies should also provide proper accommodation for mine workers and improve local infrastructure in areas where mining takes place.

“This copper they are mining here is the same copper Zambia used to mine under ZCCM, that’s what built Chingola. You’ve seen how Chingola looks, isn’t it? Can you compare it with Kisasa? Can you compare Chililabombwe with Kisasa? Can you compare Ndola with Kisasa? Can you compare Kitwe with Kisasa? It’s the same copper that we used to mine on our own,” he said.

Mr Mundubile urged President Hakainde Hichilema to publicly denounce violence being perpetrated by alleged UPND cadres. He added that the President should direct police to bring the culprits to book.

Meanwhile, UPND Alliance chairperson Charles Milupi has accused Mr Mundubile of running a dishonest campaign in North Western Province. Mr Milupi said the NRPUP leader and his running mate Makebi Zulu have been misleading Zambians during rallies in the region.

Speaking during his own engagement in the province, Mr Milupi said Mr Mundubile’s characterisation of North Western Province as developmentally neglected does not reflect the historical record.

He cited the Mutanda-Mwinilunga road and other infrastructure projects delivered under the New Dawn administration as evidence contradicting Mr Mundubile’s claims.

“Those PF guys are people we buried at the graveyard when they lost in 2021, and should not be brought back through the Tonse Alliance,” President Hichilema separately said at a rally in Western Province, reinforcing the ruling party’s message that opposition figures represent a return to past governance failures.

The exchange between the two campaigns comes as the countdown to the August 13 general election intensifies, with both sides sharpening their messaging on traditional leadership, development records and campaign conduct in the closing stretch of the race.
