Government has praised schools that benefited from the Presidential Irrigation Initiative in Mbala District in Northern Province for the way they are undertaking the programme.

Presidential Monitoring Team Leader, Kapaso Kunda, says the team is happy with the progress made so far in the implementation of the programme.

Speaking after inspecting progress at Mbala Boarding Secondary School, and St Mary’s College of Education Mr Kunda has disclosed that the team is happy with how the schools have handled the programme.

He revealed that each benefiting school had been allocated funds to undertake activities under the initiative introduced by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Kunda explained that the programme has revamped production units in schools through the installation of irrigation systems and water storage tanks, enabling schools to grow maize and other crops throughout the year.

“We are happy with what we have seen, there is progress. This programme has revamped production units in schools, we have seen schools grow different crops,” he said.

“Yes this is an initiative of President Hichilema, each school was funded to undertake activities such as the installation of irrigation systems and water storage tanks, enabling schools to grow maize and other crops throughout the year,” he added.

And Mbala District Education Board Secretary, Juanitah Mulenga, said the initiative is progressing well.

Mrs Mulenga observed that the initiative will strengthen agricultural production in schools while providing learners with practical agricultural skills.

“The programme here is moving well, I would like to commend President Hakainde Hichilema for introducing the programme, it is a timely intervention that will improve school productivity and contribute to sustainable agricultural development,” she said.

And a student teacher at St Mary’s College of Education, Ignatius Musenga observed that the school will no longer need to buy maize because it would be producing its own.

Mr Musenga said the school also plans to acquire a hammer mill to process the maize that the school will be harvesting into mealie-meal.

He thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for introducing the programme, which will help the institution achieve good harvests and improve food security.

In Northern Province, the programme is supporting 35 schools, while in Mbala four schools have benefited.

The schools benefiting from the programme include St Mary’s College of Education, Kaka Day Secondary Schools, Mbala Boarding Secondary School and Lucheche Day Secondary School.
