Going to bed immediately after a meal may feel comfortable, especially after a long day, but lying down soon after eating can create problems for some people, particularly when the meal is large or high in fat.

One of the biggest concerns is acid reflux.

After eating, your stomach contains food and digestive fluids. When you remain upright, gravity helps keep stomach contents where they belong. When you lie down shortly after eating, that gravitational advantage is reduced, making it easier for stomach contents to move back towards the oesophagus.

This can lead to heartburn — the familiar burning sensation that can rise from the stomach into the chest or throat.

You may also experience a sour taste, regurgitation, coughing or discomfort while trying to sleep.

The problem can be more noticeable at night because swallowing and other mechanisms that help clear acid from the oesophagus are reduced during sleep. Nocturnal reflux episodes can therefore last longer and expose the oesophagus to acid for longer periods.

Research and clinical guidance commonly recommend leaving around two to three hours between an evening meal and going to bed, particularly for people who experience reflux or heartburn. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends avoiding meals within two to three hours of bedtime for people managing GERD symptoms, while Mayo Clinic advises waiting at least three hours before lying down or going to bed.

The type and size of the meal can also matter.

Large meals can increase stomach distension, while high-fat foods can slow stomach emptying and are commonly associated with worsening reflux symptoms in some people.

That does not mean that eating at night automatically causes disease or that everyone who eats before bed will experience problems.

Some people can eat relatively close to bedtime without noticeable symptoms.

However, if you regularly experience heartburn after late meals, changing the timing of your evening food may help.

Your sleeping position can also matter. Research and clinical guidance indicate that lying on the left side can reduce nighttime reflux compared with lying on the right side or flat on the back.

For people who frequently experience nighttime reflux, elevating the head of the bed is another commonly recommended measure.

So, what should you do if you have just eaten and you are already feeling sleepy?

If possible, stay upright for a while rather than immediately lying flat. A gentle walk or simply sitting upright can be preferable to going straight to bed.

And if late-night eating has become a regular habit, consider moving your main evening meal earlier and allowing a few hours before sleeping.

Persistent or severe heartburn should not simply be ignored. Chest pain can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other medical problems, and symptoms such as severe chest pressure, difficulty breathing, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw require urgent medical attention.

The bottom line is simple: your body does continue digesting food while you sleep, but going to bed immediately after eating can make reflux and nighttime discomfort more likely, especially after a large or heavy meal.

Giving your body some time between dinner and bedtime may help you sleep more comfortably.
