The 2026/27 Premier League season is beginning to take shape, and the early title race is already producing plenty of excitement, with Manchester City currently sitting at the top of the table while defending champions Arsenal remain close behind.

After five matches, Manchester City have made a perfect start, winning all five of their league games to collect 15 points. Arsenal are second on 12 points after four victories and one defeat. Brighton sit third on 10 points, while Brentford, Leeds United, Liverpool and Everton are among the teams completing the early group near the European places.

For Arsenal, the start has nevertheless been encouraging despite their position below City. Mikel Arteta’s side opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City before beating Aston Villa 1-0 away from home and Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates. They then defeated Sunderland 2-0 before suffering their first setback of the campaign in a 3-0 defeat away to Brighton.

The Chelsea victory was particularly significant because Arsenal had to come from behind after Morgan Rogers gave the visitors an early lead. Kai Havertz equalised before Martin Ødegaard scored the winner as Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start at that point.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have been perfect through the opening five matches. Their latest run included a 1-0 victory over Coventry City, a result that helped them establish themselves at the summit before later victories extended their perfect record. Opta’s analysis described City as the only side with a 100 per cent record after five matches.

The early standings also show that the Premier League is already producing some unexpected developments.

Brighton have made an impressive start and were sitting third after five matches, while Brentford, Leeds and Everton were also above several traditionally prominent clubs.

Liverpool, who are adjusting to a new era under Andoni Iraola according to Opta’s analysis, had collected nine points from their opening five matches, while Chelsea were on seven points following a run that included a defeat to Arsenal and a draw against Hull City.

Manchester United, meanwhile, had five points from their first five matches, while Tottenham were struggling near the bottom of the table with only two points at that stage.

The early season has therefore already produced a fascinating contrast between the defending champions and their main challengers.

Arsenal won the 2025/26 Premier League title after finishing seven points ahead of Manchester City, according to the final standings. That makes their current position particularly interesting as they attempt to defend their crown while City look to reclaim the title.

The title race, however, remains in its early stages.

With a long season still ahead, the current table is only a snapshot of the opening weeks. Injuries, European competition, fixture congestion, January transfers and changes in form can all have a major influence before the campaign reaches its decisive stages.

For now, though, Manchester City are the team at the top of the Premier League table, with a perfect five wins from five and 15 points.

Arsenal are second with 12 points, while Brighton’s impressive start has put them third.

The early Premier League table is therefore already setting up an intriguing battle, with City looking to maintain their perfect start, Arsenal aiming to defend their crown and several ambitious clubs hoping to disrupt the traditional order.
