The country has recorded additional five cases of anthrax mortalities in Nabwalya Game Management area.

This takes the cumulative total to 49 hippos, nine elephants and six buffalos, while the cumulative number of reported human cases now stands at 26.

Following the multi-sectoral rapid response deployment conducted from 21st to 25th September 2026, the Animal Health-Wildlife and Laboratory Team undertook carcass assessments, specimen collection and environmental sampling in the affected areas.

According to Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) National Coordinator Norman Chipakupaku, disclosed that three Hippo and two elephant mortalities were related to anthrax.

Mr Chipakupaku explained that during the field investigation, three elephant and seven hippo carcasses were sighted around Kalimba-Chipangu Village, Talwe Village, the Munyamazi River, and the Munyamazi–Musipazi confluence.

He observed that continued occurrence of wildlife mortalities, particularly among hippos and elephants, underscores the need to maintain heightened surveillance, prompt reporting and rapid investigation of any newly detected carcasses within the affected and surrounding areas.

“Some carcasses could not be sampled because they were inaccessible or already significantly decomposed.

Evidence of community access to some carcass sites was also observed during the investigation,” Mr chipakupaku stated.

The Permanent Secretary indicated that routine surveillance should continue and include environmental sampling of soil and water, as well as biological sampling of suitable carcass tissues, to monitor the outbreak, assess ongoing transmission risk and guide subsequent interventions.

“The response team recommends urgent and safe disposal of carcasses, together with appropriate decontamination of affected sites,” he added.

Mr Chipakupaku added that community sensitisation should also be sustained to discourage handling, opening or consumption of carcasses and to promote immediate reporting of suspected animal deaths.

He said that DNPW, working in collaboration with the relevant sectors, will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as additional surveillance information and laboratory results become available.
