Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe has called for collective action in implementing the Pact for the Future, saying commitments made by countries must translate into tangible results.

Mr Haimbe says the Pact, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024, represents a collective commitment to strengthen multilateralism in areas such as sustainable development, peace and security, digital transformation and development financing.

The Minister was speaking in New York at a high-level event held two years after the adoption of the Pact, focusing on Africa’s progress, challenges and opportunities in its implementation.

The event was co-hosted by Zambia and Namibia, together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Union and the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General and the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa.

Mr Haimbe highlighted Zambia’s role in co-facilitating the Global Digital Compact and the Sevilla Commitment, which are aimed at advancing digital cooperation and reforming the international financial architecture.

The discussions also focused on Africa’s major challenges, including high borrowing costs, debt servicing, poverty, hunger, inequality, limited access to basic services, technology transfer and illicit financial flows.

During the discussions participants also noted progress, including increased access to electricity for 50 million more Africans.

Meanwhile, Mr Haimbe has signed a Joint Communique with Andorra’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Imma Tor Faus, establishing diplomatic relations between Zambia and the Principality of Andorra.

The two countries identified sustainable tourism as a shared priority in addressing climate change, creating jobs and promoting education.

Mr Haimbe is representing President Hakainde Hichilema at the 81st United Nations General Assembly and will deliver Zambia’s General Debate statement on Monday, September 28, 2026.
