International social media platforms are playing a growing role in shaping Zambia’s online culture and influencing the content consumed by citizens, a trend that has prompted calls for enhanced responsibility and robust content moderation, according to technology expert Glen Mwansa.

In an exclusive interview with Zambian Business Times (ZBT), Mwansa observed that many of the trends dominating Zambia’s digital space stem from foreign platforms, whose algorithms dictate which content garners the most visibility and engagement. He warned that while social media presents significant opportunities for communication, business growth, and creative expression, it is also impacting local norms and values.

Mwansa explained that algorithms often prioritize content that drives high engagement, regardless of its alignment with local cultural expectations or community standards. This, he noted, has led some creators to prioritize sensationalism over responsible content production, as they pursue views, followers, and monetization opportunities.

He added that external influences, ranging from international platforms to foreign funding ecosystems, are shaping online narratives and conversations, raising concerns about the preservation of local values in a rapidly evolving digital environment.

Mwansa called for stronger content moderation systems and clearer guidelines on content distribution to ensure that online spaces remain beneficial to Zambian society. He advocated for a more active role for group administrators in monitoring content, emphasizing that maintaining standards should not rest solely with individual users.

To further promote responsible digital citizenship and improve the quality of online content, Mwansa proposed the introduction of training and certification programs for content creators.

While acknowledging the economic benefits that social media platforms bring, such as entrepreneurship, marketing opportunities, and improved access to information, Mwansa underscored the importance of balancing these advantages with safeguards against harmful content and negative influences.

He concluded by urging Zambia to continue developing policies and community standards that reflect local priorities while adapting to the realities of a globally interconnected digital landscape. “Social media has brought many benefits, but we must also recognize its immense influence on our culture and values. The challenge is to ensure the digital space evolves in a way that enriches society while protecting community standards,” Mwansa said.
