The Civil Service and Allied Workers Union of Zambia has expressed concern over social media reports of alleged dismissal of public workers who supported opposition President for National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity Brian Mundubile, in the just ended general election.

CSAWUZ General Secretary Teddy Muyenga says such reported statements have the potential implications on the security, impartiality and professionalism of Zambia’s public service.

Mr Muyenga emphasised that civil servants, just like any other citizen are entitled to exercise their constitutional rights, including political opinions and participate in the democratic process.

He added that the public service is governed by established laws, regulations, codes of ethics and conditions of service, and that if an officer commits misconduct, disciplinary actions are duly undertaken.

“No civil servant should be intimidated, threatened, victimised. Discriminated against or subjected to disciplinary action merely because of their perceived political preference or the candidate they supported,” Mr Muyenga stated.

He therefore called on the relevant public service authorities and political leaders to provide clear reassurance to civil servants that their employment will not be threatened on account of how they voted.

He also assured public workers that CSAWUZ will not stand by while the rights, dignity and job security of civil servants are threatened on the basis of political affiliation or preference.

Mr Muyenga urged civil servants to remain calm and continue discharging their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity and impartiality, while observing the public service code of ethics and conduct, and all other applicable laws and regulations.
