The global entertainment community and Nollywood are mourning the loss of one of Africa’s greatest acting legends, Olu Jacobs, who has passed away at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, officially confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday, September 16. In his tribute, Olusoji described the veteran actor and film executive as a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and uncle whose presence will be deeply missed.

Family Confirms Passing of ‘The Lion of Lufodo’

For years, the iconic actor had been the subject of several death hoaxes online, which his family consistently debunked. However, this time, the family has solemnly confirmed the passing of the man they proudly refer to as “The Lion of Lufodo.”

Expressing deep gratitude for a life beautifully and impactfully lived, the family also made a direct appeal to media practitioners, bloggers, and social media influencers to grant them privacy during this difficult period of mourning.

An Unmatched Legacy in Theatre and Cinema

Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as a founding father of modern Nigerian cinema. His career spanned several decades and bridged the gap between the old guard of theatre and the explosive growth of Nollywood.

Before establishing himself as a household name in Nigeria, Jacobs enjoyed a successful international career. He trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and starred in several acclaimed British television shows and international films, paving the way for future generations of African actors on the global stage.

Upon returning to Nigeria, his commanding voice, regal carriage, and unmatched delivery solidified his status as an industry patriarch. Alongside his celebrated wife, Joke Silva, he co-founded the Lufodo Group, contributing significantly to the academic and practical training of emerging actors in the country.
