Chilanga District Electoral Officer Stephen Malenga has urged the Conflict Management Committee to remain vigilant and watch for early warning signs of violence during the post-election period.

Mr Malenga explains that the period immediately after elections is often tense, as some electorates may react negatively to unexpected election outcomes.

During the Conflict Management Committee review meeting, Mr Malenga stated that minimising election-related violence can be achieved through public sensitisation on the dangers of engaging in violent conduct.

“Even after elections, electorates are still prone to engaging in violence due to unmet expectations of the election outcome,” he said.

He added that civic education should target communities, youth groups and political party supporters to promote peace and tolerance.

“Therefore, it is the duty of the Conflict Management Committee to be alert and look out for any possible violence during the post-election period,” Mr Malenga added.

Meanwhile, Chilanga District Conflict Management Committee Chairperson Bishop Richard Sikazwe implored the committee to engage and educate various political party leaders to refrain from violent behavior.

Bishop Sikazwe pointed out that political party leaders must take responsibility for the conduct of their members and supporters both during and after the election period.

He emphasised that peace and unity should remain a priority as the district moves forward.

Bishop Sikazwe also called on various stakeholders to support efforts aimed at maintaining stability in Chilanga.
