The Consortium for the Rights and Welfare of Older Persons (Crop) has extended heartfelt congratulations to President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema on his victory in the August 13th, 2026, General elections.
Crop Team Leader, Geoffrey Chiyesu has stated that the outcome of the polls is a clear demonstration of the trust and confidence Zambians have placed in Mr Hichilema’s leadership.
In a statement delivered to ZANIS in Lusaka, he has described the President- Elect, as a leader who’s governance has been anchored on humility, selflessness, Godliness, wisdom, and determination to transform lives.
Mr Chiyesu praised Zambians for turning out in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights, particularly expressing pride in the participation of older citizens, some aged over 100 years, who actively took part in the elections.
He highlighted that their involvement reflects appreciation of the government’s fulfillment of campaign promises, especially through social protection policies such as social cash transfers, cash-for-work programs, and pension reforms.
Mr Chiyesu pledged older persons’ continued solidarity to President Hichilema’s national development agenda.
He further called upon all political leaders to uphold democratic principles by respecting the will of the people, stressing that elections are a race whose outcome must be accepted as part of Zambia’s chosen path of democracy.
“The willpower of the people to choose their leader must not only be respected but also be seen to be accepted,” he said, urging unity and continued peace as the nation moves forward.
Mr Chiyesu also commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia for managing the electoral process with distinction, noting the peaceful atmosphere that characterised voting.
And CROP Stakeholders Engagement Adviser appealed to President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema to remain steadfast in upholding justice, protecting citizens’ rights, and ensuring no Zambian is left behind as he carries out his second mandate.
He further called for stronger efforts in promoting social justice and inclusion, particularly for older persons.
Mr Chisanga noted that senior citizens should not be confined to social welfare support alone, but instead be integrated into programs that recognise their potential to contribute to national development.
He stressed that equitable distribution of resources must be prioritized to build the capacities of older persons, enabling them to add value to Zambia’s economic growth agenda.
“Older persons should be embraced in opportunities that dignify them as a sector that can add value to the much-anticipated national economic growth agenda in their diversity,’’ he said.
