ECZ OVERTURNS MADZI-A-TUWA WARD RESULTS, DECLARES UPND’s JOSEPH PHIRI WINNER

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has declared United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Joseph Phiri as the duly elected Councillor for Madzi-a-Tuwa Ward in Chipangali District, overturning an earlier declaration that named Independent candidate Lucky Mwale as the winner.

The correction follows mistakes committed by electoral officers during the tabulation of results from the 13th August 2026 General Election, which resulted in Mwale initially being declared Councillor-elect.

The Commission said it had received requests seeking the correction of declarations made by Returning Officers due to errors in the tabulation of results.

Following the review, the ECZ authorised Returning Officer Anthony Chupa to correct the declaration for Madzi-a-Tuwa Ward and declare Joseph Phiri of UPND as the duly elected Councillor.

The corrected declaration therefore nullifies the earlier declaration of Lucky Mwale as Councillor-elect and formally recognises Mr. Phiri as the winner of the ward.
