ZNS officer held under house arrest over alleged NRPUP recruitment, court told

A Zambia National Service officer, Colonel Masulani Mazyopa, is under house arrest over allegations that he recruited serving military personnel to join the National Revolution Party United Progressives (NRPUP), the Lusaka High Court has heard.

Lusaka, 27 September – The allegation emerged during a habeas corpus application filed by Mazyopa’s wife, Margret, who is seeking his release after he was detained on August 27, 2026.

State witness Nicholas Chilomo told the court that Mazyopa was taken to Drug Enforcement Commission headquarters for questioning and was allegedly linked to other military officers suspected of recruiting serving personnel into NRPUP.

Chilomo named a Zambia Air Force officer, whom he described as the brother of the NRPUP presidential candidate, and retired ZNS Lieutenant Colonel Quincy Mwansa as others allegedly linked to the activity.

He said the two senior officers were currently on the run and that Mazyopa was also being linked to an incident involving former commandos found at a house.

The witness said Mazyopa was not brought to court because of security concerns and added that his detention was ordered by a joint committee chaired by the Army Commander.

The court has reserved its judgment to a later date.

Mazyopa has not been convicted of any offence and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
