THE Drug Enforcement Commission has formally charged and arrested the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, Dr. Alick Banda, for unlawful possession of property suspected to have been obtained unlawfully.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, 2026, DEC Public Relations Officer Allan Tamba said Archbishop Banda has been charged with Possession of Property reasonably believed to have been unlawfully obtained, contrary to Section 319 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that Dr. Banda, on dates unknown but between April 22, 2021 and December 27, 2023, allegedly had in his possession a blue Toyota Hilux registration number ALF 7734, property reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained from the Zambia Revenue Authority.

The DEC said the vehicle forms part of a wider investigation involving approximately 22 ZRA motor vehicles alleged to have been improperly disposed of.

The Commission said Dr. Banda is scheduled to appear before court today, and that the public will be updated on the outcome of the court process as and when it will be lawful to do so.

The DEC urged citizens to refrain from issuing or circulating inflammatory statements regarding the matter in order to promote public peace, law and order.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to discharging its mandate to investigate and prosecute financial crimes through lawful and evidence-based processes.
