THE Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority has dismissed reports that it has recalled Nifedipine, a medication used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain.

ZAMRA Director Makomani Siyanga said in a statement that the authority had noted a social media message advising the public to immediately stop taking Nifedipine and return it to pharmacies. Siyanga said the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe issued a recall notice for specific Nifedipine products and batch numbers. He said MCAZ clarified the recall did not apply to all Nifedipine products and that other brands, strengths and batch numbers were not affected. “Members of the public should not panic or stop taking prescribed Nifedipine solely on the basis of the circulating social media message,” Siyanga said. He urged patients to continue taking medicines as prescribed and to seek guidance from a healthcare professional if they have concerns about a particular product or batch. “We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any further guidance that may be necessary,” Siyanga said. “Members of the public are hereby encouraged to avoid sharing unverified health messages and to rely on ZAMRA and other official regulatory authorities for factual information.”
