NEW Nation Party president Nevers Mumba has resigned from active politics with immediate effect and handed over leadership of the party to vice-president Reuben Sambo.

Mumba, a former vice president and diplomat, announced the decision at a media briefing on Tuesday. He said he has also withdrawn from the UPND Alliance Council of Presidents.

“This is not a retirement from service, this is a redefinition of service because Zambia needs me differently in this hour,” Mumba said. “I am stepping aside from active partisan politics.”

Mumba, 29 years in politics, said the move followed consultations and what he called “a calling to serve the country in a different capacity.” He said he had consulted President Hakainde Hichilema, who wished him well in his role as a former vice president and statesman.

Under the party arrangement, Sambo will serve as acting president until the next party convention.

Mumba said he was often misunderstood in the political arena. “Each statement I have made has been twisted to mean something else,” he said.

He said he would use his political experience, knowledge of Scripture and diplomatic background to provide guidance on national affairs.

Mumba stressed the decision was not motivated by bitterness and thanked Zambians for the opportunity to serve in various government portfolios.

The New Nation Party is in an alliance with the ruling UPND.
