Zambia State Insurance Company (ZSIC) General Insurance Managing Director Trevor Jengajenga said agricultural insurance provides farmers with financial support to recover from losses caused by unforeseen risks.
Mr Jengajenga said 7,658 farmers were insured under the Grain for Premium programme during the 2025/2026 farming season.
Speaking during a Grain for Premium insurance payout ceremony in Magodi, Eastern Province, Mr Jengajenga said 2,392 farmers had so far received K795,542 in claims, while another 1,844 farmers received K447,358 through a partnership with Good Nature Agro.
He said the payouts demonstrated the importance of insurance in protecting farmers’ investments and sustaining their livelihoods when farming activities are affected by adverse conditions.
Mr Jengajenga said climate-related risks were becoming an increasing threat to farmers, making insurance an important tool for managing agricultural losses.
He said while farmers could not prevent droughts, failed rains or floods, insurance could help cushion them from the financial impact of such events.
Mr Jengajenga said the Grain for Premium programme also demonstrated the importance of partnerships between insurance companies, Government, development partners, aggregators and farmers in expanding access to affordable agricultural insurance.
And Good Nature Agro Chief Executive Officer Sunday Silungwe commended farmers for contributing to national development through agriculture.
Mr Silungwe said the insurance programme was helping farmers protect investments made in agricultural inputs while also providing support in meeting financial obligations such as loan repayments.
He encouraged farmers to ask questions about agricultural insurance products to fully understand the benefits, terms and available options.
Meanwhile, ZSIC Grain for Premium Risk Insurance representative Mosonda Kambagwe said agricultural insurance could help farmers manage risks associated with climate change, pests and diseases.
Mr Kambagwe urged farmers to pay insurance premiums as a way of safeguarding their investments and reducing the financial burden associated with agricultural losses.
He also encouraged farmers to consider different agricultural insurance packages and adopt appropriate measures to prepare for climate-related risks.
