The Smallholder and Farmers Development Association (SAFADA) says over 50 farmers are expected to be trained in Climate Smart Agriculture in Mungule area in Chisamba District, as a way of strengthening household and national food security.

Speaking to the media in an interview, SAFADA Chief Executive Officer, Boyd Moobwe disclosed that the initiative is meant to equip farmers with necessary skills and tools to use in the adverse of the El Nino weather forecast.

 He said the training which will be on the 30th of September will also help farmers adapt to climate change, improve agricultural production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr Moobwe added that the training is timely as Zambia prepares for a farming season expected to experience below-normal rainfall, particularly in the Southern part of the country.

The SAFADA Chief Executive Officer also revealed that his organisation will also work with the Ministry of Agriculture and private-sector stakeholders to provide farmers with practical information and opportunities for direct interaction with agricultural service providers.

He noted that during the same one-day farmer training workshop, SAFADA will also launch an online two months agriculture programme aimed at equipping small-scale farmers and other interested groups with knowledge on climate-smart agriculture.

Mr Moobwe further disclosed that the programme is also being undertaken in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology at the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions.

He added that among the organisations invited to the farmer training workshop are the Ministry of Agriculture, Zambia Commodity Exchange, Kulima, Julu Agrovet, CAMCO Limited, Agreasco LTD, Way-fine Limited and the Food Reserve Agency.
