Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident to the media which occurred yesterday, September 29, 2026 between 06:00 hours and 09:00 hours at Mutelela Village in Mphamba chiefdom of Lundazi district.
Mr Mweemba said both the suspect Nelson Chisomo Banda and his 26 year old wife Ephelida Phiri, are farm workers for a Zambian farmer.
“A Malawian national, Nelson Chisomo Banda allegedly murdered his step daughter Sofeliti Banda aged 3, while his wife was working on the farm,” he said.
It is alleged that both the suspect and the mother of the deceased left the child at home as they went to work at their employer’s farm.
“Shortly after, a female neighbour to the couple spotted the suspect walking back alone to the house. The suspect was seen entering the house and minutes later, the neighbour heard him call the name of the child twice and was seen leaving the house back to the farm where he had left his wife,” he explained.
Mr Mwemba said the suspect’s wife said when her husband went back to the farm where she had remained working, he told her to return home and check on the child whom he claimed had messed herself.
Upon returning to the house, the mother found her daughter lifeless and the husband failed to give proper explanation as to what had really transpired.
Mr Mweemba said physical inspection of the child’s body showed blood coming out from the child’s mouth and nose as well as faecal matter coming out from the child’s anal opening.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at Lundazi District Hospital mortuary awaiting a possible postmortem examination.
Police have detained the suspect to help with investigations in the suspected murder case.
