Zambia : Mpika’s Kapamba Bridge Vandalized

Mpika District Commissioner David Siame has expressed concern over the vandalism of iron bars on Kapamba Bridge in Chief Mukungule’s area, describing the act as retrogressive and regrettable.

Mr Siame said unknown individuals had stolen 2 of the six iron bars installed on the bridge meant to reinforce and support its pillars.

He said the vandalism undermined the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and provide safe and reliable road networks in rural communities.

Mr Siame said the theft is worrying as it threatens to reverse the gains made in improving infrastructure in Chief Mukungule’s area.

He said that he has since engaged the Zambia Police Service to investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.

Mr Siame has also appealed to residents to provide any information that could assist the police in identifying and apprehending the culprits.

He urged community members not to shield offenders, regardless of their relationship, saying collective responsibility was key to safeguarding public infrastructure.

Mr Siame said the removal of the iron bars had significantly weakened the structural integrity of the bridge, posing a serious safety risk to users, particularly motorists who rely on crossing the bridge when travelling to mining areas.

He reiterated that the government would not relent in protecting public assets and warned that anyone found vandalising public infrastructure would face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, Kapamba Ward Councillor-elect Aron Kabanda said the iron bars were suspected to have been stolen by some members of the local community who allegedly intended to use the metal to make hoes and other farming implements.

Mr Kabanda said such practices demonstrate a worrying disregard for public property and called for collective responsibility among residents to protect infrastructure intended to benefit the wider community.

He warned that if the situation was not addressed, the weakened state of the bridge could lead to accidents or even the collapse of the structure, potentially cutting off a vital route connecting several communities in the chiefdom.

Mr Kabanda said vandalism of public infrastructure not only posed safety risks but also placed an unnecessary financial burden on the government, which would be required to fund repairs that could have been avoided.

He has since called for sustained vigilance among traditional leaders and residents to ensure that Kapamba bridge and other public infrastructure in the district are protected for the safety and benefit of the community.
