Four schools in Nakonde district in Muchinga Province have been funded under the Presidential Irrigation Initiative Programme (PIIP), aimed at promoting food security and helping to sustain the school feeding programme.

Ministry of Education District Planning Officer John Zimba says the initiative targets schools with active production units, to ensure sustainability.

Mr Zimba disclosed that the initiative is being implemented in three secondary schools and one primary school.

He named the beneficiary schools as Nakonde Secondary, Kaombwe Secondary, Ntolondo Secondary and Mukumbe Primary School.

“For the selection criteria, they picked schools that already had an active production unit programme. Some schools have been actively participating in production through the same grants they receive every quarter and once they harvest they were able to facilitate payments for volunteer teachers and also help vulnerable pupils with shoes and uniforms,” he said.

The District Planning Officer stated that three of the schools, Mukumbe, Kaombwe and Ntolondo, have each been allocated K298, 000 for the project.

He further explained that Nakonde Secondary received K214, 000 because the school already has a borehole.

And Mr Zimba revealed that the funding will also cover drilling of boreholes to a minimum depth of 80 meters, installation of a 5,000 liter water tank and a complete irrigation system.

He added that farming inputs will also be procured using the allocated funds.

“Everything has been funded and moneys are sitting in the school accounts. What is left is just getting occasional updates on how the programme is fairing,” he said.

Mr Zimba further disclosed that contractors have already been engaged and procurement of equipment is currently underway.

He stated that the ministry is working closely with the Department of Water Resources Development to ensure standards are met during implementation.

“We are also working in partnership with the Water Resources Department because they understand irrigation, water pressure and the set ups. We want to do the right things,” he said.

The Presidential Irrigation Initiative programme was launched on June 5th, 2026 by Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet Oliver Kalabo on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema, with a motive to transform schools into productive centres, enabling learners to develop practical skills in agriculture, irrigation and entrepreneurship.
