Mpika Town Council Chairperson, Chola Chilumba has led hundreds of residents in a cleaning exercise aimed at keeping the Central Business District (CBD) clean and promoting a healthy environment.

Mr Chilumba, who was accompanied by some officials from Mpika Town Council and students from Michael Chilufya Sata School of Nursing, observed that the district is vast and requires collaboration between the local authority and the community to maintain cleanliness.

He said the involvement of residents was important in ensuring that the town remains clean and free from conditions that could contribute to the spread of diseases.

Mr Chilumba said this in a statement made available to the media in Mpika district today.

He said the team has so far collected large quantities of garbage from various parts of town using earth-moving equipment procured by the council through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Mr Chilumba said the equipment includes a Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLB), which has enhanced the council’s capacity to collect and dispose of waste.

He said there is a need for the community to adequately prepare for the approaching rainy season in order to prevent waterborne diseases such as Cholera.

Mr Chilumba said the council had distributed face masks and gloves to residents who participated in the cleaning exercise.

He further called on well-wishers to support the council with bins to help improve waste management and prevent the spread of waterborne diseases during the rainy season.

Senior Health Inspector, Francis Kapila said public health students currently on attachment at Mpika Town Council have been deployed to inspect restaurants and other food outlets to ensure compliance with health and sanitation standards.

Mr Kapila said the exercise is also part of the students’ practical training in maintaining hygiene and managing waste.

He said the training is intended to equip the students with practical knowledge and skills in public health and sanitation.

Mr Kapila said the council is also working with the business community, adding that establishments found operating under unsanitary conditions would be closed in accordance with public health regulations.

Michael Chilufya Sata School of Nursing and Midwifery Public Health student, Savior Chewe said the students were inspecting restaurants and other food outlets to assess their hygiene and sanitation standards.

Mr Chewe said the Council, in collaboration with students on attachment, had visited Mpika Main Bus Station, where they inspected restaurants and assessed the sanitation conditions in which food businesses were operating.

He said it was the duty of public health officers and students to ensure that restaurant owners adhered to hygiene and sanitation standards in their working environments.

Meanwhile, some residents spoken to by  the media commended the local authority for taking action to maintain cleanliness in the CBD.

The residents said maintaining a clean environment was important in preventing diseases and ensuring a healthy community.
