The Ministry of Education has expressed satisfaction with the progress made at Kanyangala Primary School in Chienge District under the Presidential Irrigation Initiative (PII).

 Ministry of Education Directorate of National Science Centre Training Officer, Moses Phiri, says the school had made good progress, particularly in fencing and land clearing, with the remaining works expected to be completed by the end of this week to pave the way for maize planting.

“We are impressed with the progress that has been made so far, particularly in terms of fencing and land clearing. The remaining works are expected to be completed by the end of this week so that the school can proceed with maize planting,” Mr Phiri said.

Mr Phiri, who is one of two officers monitoring the programme in Luapula Province, said the nearly flat terrain at the school was suitable for precision farming and the installation of drip irrigation systems.

He urged the school management, teachers and learners to accelerate the remaining works so that planting could commence as planned.

Kanyangala Primary School Headteacher, Idah Nkandu, said the school was on course to complete all the works and plant maize by this week.

Mrs Nkandu said the project would provide learners with practical agricultural skills that they could apply even after completing their education.

“This project will give our learners practical agricultural skills which they can use even after completing their education,” she said.

She said Kanyangala Primary School and Lambwe Chomba 2 Secondary School were the two pilot schools selected for the initiative in Chienge District.

And Chienge District Commissioner, Rosemary Chikonde has called for greater involvement of Agricultural Science teachers in the project to ensure that learners gain practical farming skills.

Ms Chikonde said the irrigation field should be used as a practical learning environment where pupils could learn land preparation, planting, crop management and maintenance.

She urged pupils to take both the project and their education seriously, saying the knowledge and skills acquired would help prepare them for future careers and leadership.
