Zimba District has recorded a major milestone in the education sector with the opening of its first-ever higher education institution, Africa Wesleyan University College.

‎The institution, established by the Pilgrim Wesleyan Church, is expected to expand access to university education for young people in Zimba, Zambia and other parts of Africa.

‎

‎The opening of the university places Zimba on the map of higher education centres while creating an opportunity for students to pursue tertiary education closer to their communities.

‎

‎United States-based businessman and principal funder of the project, Garry Ott, who officiated at the opening ceremony, said the institution had been established to serve students beyond Zambia.

‎

‎Mr Ott said the university would provide young people from across Africa with an opportunity to access quality higher education while contributing to the development of communities.

‎

‎“This University is not only for Zimba or Zambia, but is intended to serve students from across the African continent,” Mr Ott said.

‎

He said the institution will provide an important platform for young people to acquire knowledge and skills that could contribute to the development of their respective communities and spiritual life.

‎

‎And Africa Wesleyan University College Principal, Henry Prince, said the institution was expected to enroll its first intake in January 2027.

‎

‎Dr Prince said preparations were underway to ensure that the university is ready to provide higher education opportunities to students when the first intake commences.

‎

‎And Mapatizya Member of Parliament, Emeldah Munashabantu said the establishment of the university was an investment in education and the future of young people.

‎

‎“The establishment of this university is not only an investment in education, but an investment in the future of our young people,” Ms Munashabantu said.

‎

‎She, however, appealed for the introduction of scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure that financial challenges did not prevent deserving young people from accessing higher education.

‎

‎Ms Munashabantu said the coming of the university was also a fulfilment of the Pilgrim Wesleyan Church’s long-standing commitment to education in Zimba.

‎

‎Earlier, Zimba District Commissioner, Robinson Mulamfu said the university had added significant value to the face of the district.

‎

‎Mr Mulamfu said the institution would contribute to the development of the education sector and the wider community by creating opportunities for skills development and higher learning.

‎

‎Meanwhile, Wesleyan Presiding Bishop, Juden Siachitema said the establishment of the university had been made possible through endurance, hope and patience among those who had worked towards its establishment.

‎

‎Bishop Siachitema said the foundation laid for the institution carried a responsibility for the university to develop beyond being an ordinary centre of learning.
