Farmers in Kasenengwa District in Eastern Province have been urged not to sell all their maize during the 2026/2027 crop marketing season.

Kasenengwa District Agriculture Coordinator Adamson Mwale said the district recorded a bumper harvest during the just-ended farming season, making it important for farmers to reserve enough maize for household consumption.

Mr Mwale said keeping adequate food stocks would help households remain food secure until the next harvest, especially in the event of drought.

He was speaking when he represented Kasenengwa District Commissioner Rachael Phiri at the commissioning of water systems in Chikuwe Village.

Mr Mwale said reports from the Meteorological Department indicate that the country could experience drought during the upcoming rainy season, hence the need for households to take measures to ensure food security.

He further urged farmers to plant early-maturing and drought-resistant crops during the 2026/2027 farming season to safeguard yields amid the projected unfavourable rainfall pattern.

Mr Mwale said the district agriculture office had already started sensitising communities on the importance of adopting drought-resistant and early-maturing crops.
