Chama District Commissioner, Yobe Goma, says plans are underway to extend the Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience Plus (FANSER+) Project to the district as the programme enters its second year of implementation.

Mr Goma says the extension of the project to the district will help reach more vulnerable rural households with interventions aimed at reducing malnutrition and strengthening household resilience.

He said this during an engagement on the implementation of the FANSER+ Project in Chama district.

Mr Goma said the project, which is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), complements Government’s efforts to address malnutrition among vulnerable communities.

He said the project is being implemented in line with the First 1,000 Most Critical Days Programme under the leadership of the National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC).

Mr Goma said focusing on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, from conception to the second birthday, is critical in preventing stunted growth and protecting children’s cognitive and physical development.

“By targeting the first 1,000 days of a child’s life from conception to the second birthday, we are not just tackling stunted growth, we are protecting the cognitive and physical potential of our future leaders, teachers and policymakers,” he said.

Mr Goma said malnutrition remains a quiet but devastating barrier to human capital development and requires concerted efforts from Government, cooperating partners and communities.

He said strengthening nutrition interventions at household and community level will contribute to improved health, learning outcomes and the overall wellbeing of children.

Mr Goma said the FANSER+ Project is complementing Government’s efforts to improve food and nutrition security while enhancing the resilience of vulnerable rural households.

The FANSER+ Project is being implemented in six target districts of Eastern Province, , with a focus on vulnerable rural households and the prevention of malnutrition.

Mr Goma has since called on communities to actively participate in the programme and make use of the knowledge and interventions provided to improve household nutrition.
