The University of Zambia (UNZA) has sworn in its 58th University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) Executive for 2027, led by newly elected president Amos Mwale and Vice President Lisa Phiri.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, Dean of Students and Commissioner of Oaths, John Munkombwe, urged the newly sworn-in executives to work closely with the Students’ Affairs Unit, emphasizing that their primary responsibility was to serve the student body.

“The main objective of student leadership is to serve the students,” Munkombwe said.

He described the Students’ Union as one of the most influential bodies at the institution, noting that its influence could be used either positively or negatively, depending on the leadership’s approach.

Munkombwe cited the achievements of former UNZASU president Mwanto Kabaso, particularly his involvement in sanitation works at the university.

“I can testify that Mwanto Kabaso had achieved so much as he was on the ground as a lead role to the sanitation works at the University,” he said.

He further urged Mwale to build on Kabaso’s legacy rather than focusing on proving himself, adding that the Students’ Affairs Unit remained open to consultation whenever the new leadership encountered challenges.

Meanwhile, former UNZASU president Mwanto Kabaso congratulated the newly sworn-in executives and urged them to uphold transparency, foster teamwork and prioritise student welfare.

“I urge you to always work together and be in consultation with the Students’ Affairs,” Kabaso said.

Among the associations represented at the ceremony was the University of Zambia Distance Education Students Association (UNZADESA).
