Trump and Tech Giants Agree to Voluntary AI Self-Regulation

President Donald Trump and leaders of major technology companies have signed a voluntary agreement to strengthen oversight of advanced artificial intelligence systems.

The agreement requires companies to establish internal controls, conduct safety reviews and work with independent external auditors to assess whether those controls are functioning properly.

Company boards will also establish committees to review reports from internal and external auditors, creating multiple layers of oversight for advanced AI systems.

However, the agreement is not legally binding and does not establish mandatory government regulations or enforceable penalties. It instead relies on companies to police their own AI development.

Trump described the agreement as “morally binding” and said the industry should regulate itself, while the accord leaves open the possibility of turning the commitments into formal laws or regulations in the future.

The deal comes as pressure grows in Washington for stronger safeguards over increasingly powerful AI systems.
