A clergyman in Solwezi District has called for unity of purpose following the just ended August 2026, general elections.
Catholic Diocese of Solwezi Priest Christopher Sawila says now that the elections have been concluded and leaders elected, citizens should shift their focus towards rebuilding communities and promoting sustainable development.
Father Sawila told the media in an interview today that the period of political campaigns, rallies and intense debates has come to an end, making it necessary for citizens to concentrate on development.
He said that although elections provide an opportunity for citizens to consider different perspectives and competing visions for the country’s future, the conclusion of the electoral process should mark the beginning of collective efforts towards national development.
“The season of campaigns, political rallies, and intense debate has come to an end. As the dust settles across the country, the moment has arrived to shift our collective focus from the campaign trail to the essential work of community building and sustainable development,” he said.
Fr Sawila said both elected leaders and those who were not elected have a role to play in promoting unity and serving the interests of citizens.
He said North-Western Province has vast opportunities as well as challenges that require collective efforts beyond political party lines.
“North-Western Province holds vast economic potential, from its expanding mining and agricultural sectors to rich natural resources and vibrant trade communities.
Maximizing these resources to improve infrastructure, health services, and education requires input and commitment from across the political spectrum,” he added.
Fr Sawila said development is a shared responsibility that requires constructive dialogue, accountability and criticism where necessary.
He has since called on newly elected leaders to govern inclusively, while urging those in opposition to provide constructive criticism and contribute to the development of the province and the nation.
