A 28-year-old nurse in Petauke District, Eastern Province, was allegedly raped by one of three masked men who broke into her home in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29, 2026, before stealing household goods worth about K11,500.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba told TV Yatu that the incident happened around 02:00 hours at the nurse’s home in Hillside Compound.

According to Mweemba, the three suspects allegedly gained entry into the house after damaging the locking system of the kitchen door.

The nurse, who works at Petauke District Hospital, reported the matter at Petauke Police Station around 03:20 hours after the suspects had fled.

Mweemba said one of the suspects, who was wearing a face mask, allegedly entered the survivor’s bedroom, where he threatened her with a screwdriver before sexually assaulting her.

A second suspect allegedly covered his face using a chitenge found inside the house and remained at the bedroom doorway, while the third suspect, who was also masked, reportedly stayed outside the bedroom window.

Police said the survivor was able to see the suspects because the bedroom lights were switched on during the incident.

After the alleged sexual assault, the suspects reportedly moved around the house and stole several household items before escaping through the same door they allegedly used to gain entry.

Among the items reported stolen were a 10-kilogramme bag of mealie meal, 2.5 litres of cooking oil, a home theatre system, two iPhones, a smartwatch and K400 in cash.

Police valued the stolen household goods at approximately K11,500.

The survivor later sought assistance from her landlord, who accompanied her back to the house and helped her report the matter to police.

Mweemba said the survivor sustained bruises around her neck and complained of pain following the incident.

She has since been issued with a medical report form as investigations into the matter continue.

Police have not yet arrested any suspects or recovered the stolen property.

Mweemba said investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the three suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.

The case has raised fresh concerns about nighttime security, particularly for residents living alone, as police continue efforts to establish the identities of those responsible.

The alleged rape and burglary remain under police investigation, and the suspects have not yet been brought before court.
