Chisamba Rural Health Centre, in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), has launched a screening exercise for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Chisamba District.

The exercise, which focuses on HIV and syphilis testing, is targeting people within the health facility’s catchment area, with the aim of detecting infections early and ensuring timely treatment.

 Monday Mobile Market, where the exercise was underway, Chisamba Rural Health Centre In-Charge Merry Muyembe said the exercise follows community sensitisation on HIV and syphilis, as well as the identification of STI hotspot areas, including Chawama Compound.

“We identified our hotspots for STIs under HIV and Syphilis, that is Chawama and we have a number of positive cases from there. So we wanted to take advantage of mass sensitisation and identification of the cases and early treatment,” Ms Muyembe said.

She said those who tested positive have since been started on treatment and will continue receiving care at the health facility.

Ms Muyembe expressed optimism that more positive cases would be detected if the screening exercise is extended to Chawama Compound.

She further said that the health centre aims to screen at least 1,000 people, but that limited resources and logistical challenges have hampered the exercise.
