Zambia is set to become Southern Africa’s centre of excellence in health tourism following the signing of a US$2 billion agreement to build a Medical City in Lusaka.

Minister of Health, Roma Chilengi has announced that Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DIHAD Sustainable Project Management L.L.C for the construction of the facility in Lusaka’s Airport City.

Prof. Chilengi signed the MoU on behalf of Government while Khaled Al Attar signed on behalf of DIHAD at the UAE-Zambia Business Forum in Abu Dhabi yesterday, which was officiated by President Hakainde Hichilema.

He said the Medical City will reverse the trend of Zambians travelling abroad for complex treatment at great cost to families and Government, and instead draw patients from across the region.

“The Medical City will keep our patients at home and draw patients from across the region,” Prof. Chilengi said.

Prof. Chilengi said the state-of-the-art complex will house a National Paediatric Cardiac Centre and a National Renal Transplant and Kidney Disease Centre stating that the facility will also build on Zambia’s existing radiotherapy services with expanded oncology, cancer diagnostics and research.

He said other specialised services to be offered include robotic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, maternal and child health and rehabilitation.

Prof. Chilengi stated that the project will also have a hospital, university and school to train the next generation of Zambian specialists.

He added that beyond health facilities, the Medical City will feature a convention centre, auditorium, outdoor theatre, three, four and five-star hotels, hotel apartments, offices, shops, wellness and sports facilities, parks and homes.

Prof. Chilengi said the project directly supports the Grow Zambia Agenda and its target of five million tourist arrivals.

He noted that health tourists and their families will fill hotels and spend in the local economy, while the project attracts foreign investment and creates jobs in construction, health and hospitality sectors.

“Under the agreement, DIHAD will work with a multi-sectoral Government team on the planning, design and management of the project, together they will identify and select partners and investors who will bring the Medical City to life,” he said.

Prof. Chilengi explained that until the Medical City opens, DIHAD will help Zambian patients access treatment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through competitively priced packages.

He clarified that the MoU carries no financial commitment for the Government and that the hospital and training hub will be built first so that Zambians benefit as early as possible.
