Mufwashi Member of Parliament in Kasempa District, Brian Kakonkanya has called on elected leaders and other stakeholders to put aside political differences and work together to accelerate development and improve service delivery to the people.

Mr Kakonkanya says MPs have a responsibility to drive development by ensuring government programmes reach the people.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Mr Kakonkanya said the country can only progress when leaders remain focused and committed.

“Ultimately, we as Members of Parliament are supposed to be drivers of development. We need to be on top of things to ensure services are delivered to the people,” he added.

Mr Kakonkanya said the creation of Mufwashi Constituency through delimitation was a milestone presenting new development opportunities for Kasempa District.

He said Kasempa was previously too large for effective service delivery, and that the new constituency would bring development and government services closer to the people.

“Previously, Kasempa was too big for us to provide effective service to the people. Now, with delimitation, we have another constituency, which I represent. This means a lot of development for Kasempa, and particularly Mufwashi,” he said.

Mr Kakonkanya described the media as a key partner in national development, urging journalists to continue informing the public about government programmes and development projects.

“You are actually the government’s partners in development because you have a task to broadcast and share what the government is doing to highlight developments to the people of Zambia,” he said.

He said political leaders and other stakeholders should now concentrate on development, since the electoral period has ended.

“Politics are finished, elections are done, and now it is time to come together in the interest of the people of Kasempa and development,” Mr Kakonkanya said.

He said there should be less political antagonism as leaders work together, adding that the five-year political cycle is short and should be used to deliver meaningful development.

“Lets focus on development. Five years is not very long. Very soon, in 2031, we go for another election, so we need to focus our energies on developing Kasempa,” he added.

Mr Kakonkanya said the creation of Mufwashi Constituency was an opportunity that should be fully utilised by leaders and stakeholders to improve the welfare of the people.
