Government, through the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) has distributed relief food to 247 households in Chovwe of Kalumbila District whose crops were destroyed by elephants earlier this year.

Relief food is aimed at cushioning the affected households and reducing the burden caused by the human-wildlife conflict.

Speaking during the distribution of the food items, Kalumbila District Commissioner (DC), Brenda Sankisa commended Government for responding to the needs of the affected communities.

Ms Sankisa said the relief food should not be regarded as compensation but as Government support to cushion households affected by the disaster.

She said human-wildlife conflict is a natural disaster and that the elephants are state property, requiring collective efforts to find lasting solutions.

Ms Sankisa said the relief will help lighten the burden on families whose crops were destroyed

And District Disaster Management Officer, Mumba Chilangwa said the consignment includes 360 bags by 25-kilograms mealie meal, 147 by 20 kilograms sugar, 94 bags by three-kilograms soya chunks and 18 bags by 50-kilograms beans.

The other consignment includes 49 bags by 50-kilograms salt, 14 bags by 50-kilograms kapenta and 360 liters of Cooking oil.

Beneficiaries have thanked Government for the relief food, saying it will help ease the impact of crop losses.
