UPND Alliance Partner, Highvie Hamududu has attributed President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election to what he describes as good and steady leadership.
Mr Hamududu says the President’s leadership of five years period is for continuity that has demonstrated capacity, particularly in managing the economy.
He says Zambia has also regained a good reputation in the international community as a result of the government’s macroeconomic policies.
He says the country could not afford to experiment with new leadership, considering the economic challenges Zambia faced when President Hichilema first assumed office in 2021.
Mr Hamududu, who is the Party of National Unity and Progress leader, said this on a Morning Show program on Radio Phoenix’ monitored by ZANIS in Lusaka today.
He explained that the economy of Zambia was mismanaged then in the PF regime noting that his administration moved the economy from what he termed ‘intensive care’ to a period of stabilisation and growth.
The Economist noted that Zambia’s economy is now growing at about five percent, which he described as one of the higher growth rates on the African continent.
Mr Hamududu said economic growth is important because it creates opportunities for job creation, poverty reduction and addressing income inequalities.
He says increased economic activity also supports exports and foreign exchange inflows, while strengthening the country’s international reserves.
He stated that inflation has also declined from a high of about 23 percent to single digits, resulting in greater price stability.
The former Bweengwa Member of Parliament further explained that the stability in prices has contributed to an improvement in the cost of living compared to the situation experienced in the PF regime.
Mr Hamududu hinted that President Hichilema’s second term therefore presents an opportunity for the country to build on the gains made and achieve greater prosperity for Zambians.
President Hakainde Hichilema has been re-elected for a second term after defeating opposition leader Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Progress (NRPUP) in the August 13 presidential election.
Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis declared United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema after he secured 2,965,326 votes, while Mundubile polled 1,856,217, giving the incumbent a winning margin of 1,109,109 votes.
President Hichilema’s tally represents 61.5 percent (%) of the votes cast compared with 38.5% for Mundubile.
