The United Party for National Development (UPND) has scooped the Bangweulu Parliamentary seat in Samfya District after beating the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) in a tightly contested election.
UPND’s Happy Mampa polled 13,012 votes, beating his closest rival, Anthony Kasandwe of NRPUP, who got 12,071 votes.
Returning officer Milton Kabo declared Mr Mampa as duly elected Member of Parliament for Bangweulu Constituency.
And addressing the supporters who gathered to celebrate his victory, the newly elected Bangweulu MP thanked the people of Samfya for giving him an opportunity to represent them in the National Assembly.
Mr Mampa pledged to deliver development in the constituency during his term in office.
Other candidates who contested the seat included Reuben Chama, an Independent, who got 10,734 votes, Citizens First (CF) Party’s Derick Chanda who polled 874 votes, and Moses Chabala of Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) who got 293 votes.
Meanwhile, NRPUP candidate James Kapilila retained his seat as Samfya District Council Chairperson after he polled 21,838 votes beating his two other rivals of UPND and CF.
UPND’s Moses Katongo got 11,310 votes while Damson Chalwe of CF polled 4,089 votes.
Returning Officer Milton Kabo therefore declared James Kapilila as duly elected Council Chairperson for Samfya.
