The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says the presidential nomination period has closed and cannot be reopened, as the electoral process has now moved into the campaign phase ahead of the August 2026 General Election.

This follows clarification from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security that the Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) remains a registered political party and was never converted into a church or religious organisation, contrary to social media claims.

ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager Patricia Luhanga has told Capital FM that all candidates were given the opportunity to submit nominations within the official timetable set under the Electoral Process Act and Electoral Code of Conduct.

Luhanga explains that PeP running mate Sean Tembo engaged the Returning Officer during nominations and indicated he would return after going for lunch, but did not go back to complete the process despite follow-ups.

She says he failed to present himself within the stipulated nomination period, adding that the process has now legally progressed into the campaign stage. -Capital FM
