A 33-YEAR-OLD woman and her seven-year-old son have died in a suspected case of sui.cide in Mazabuka District.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2026, in Riverview Compound.

The deceased have been identified as Willey Mweemba, 33, and her seven-year-old son, both of Riverview Compound.

Namalongo says the matter was reported to Mazabuka Police by Venters Mweemba, 52, of Polo Club, who is the father and grandfather of the deceased.

According to police, Mweemba’s husband left for Mazabuka Town at around 08:00 hours, while their son had gone to school.

Around 12:50 hours, Mweemba reportedly contacted a neighbour for assistance.

The neighbour, together with other community members, rushed to the house and gained entry into the bedroom, where they found Mweemba and her son in distress.

The two were rushed to Kaonga Mini Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police officers who visited the hospital reported that there were no visible injuries on the bodies.

Namalongo said officers who visited the scene recovered an empty bottle of insecticide and a note, whose contents he said could not be disclosed as they form part of the ongoing investigation.

The bodies have since been deposited at Mazabuka Hospital Mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death.

Police have opened an inquiry file and investigations are continuing.
