THE Chitimukulu, Kanyanta Manga II of the Bemba, says Zambians, especially the youth, who are fond of verbally abusing the elderly and leaders on social media risk being cursed.

The 82-year-old traditional leader, himself a victim of verbal abuse, is dismayed by the troubling and growing culture of insults online, particularly by young people who attack senior citizens.

“This culture of not having respect is very bad. Bambi muleiletelela fye amashamo, ine nemuntu nemukote, ninshi wingalantukila [Some of you will just invite curses; how can you insult an old man like me]?” he said.

The Chitimukulu is concerned that some young people in his chiefdom are discrediting him online over his resolve not to involve himself in political fights.

He was speaking yesterday during the unveiling of the crocodile statue in Kasama, Northern Province.

The Chitimukulu noted with concern that some of his subjects are departing from Bemba culture, which is known for its respect for leadership and the elderly.

The octogenarian regrets that some people who are younger than his grandchildren hurl insults at him online because of his refusal to comment on political issues.

“Ine nine Chitimukulu, nomba ngawamona efyo mulentukaula, ndinemyaka 82 ine, bamo abalelemba mu social media, abeshikulu bandi bakulapo, e ulentuka ine? [I’m 82 years old and yet some people insulting me online are younger than my grandchildren].”

The Chitimukulu, who has distanced himself from political bickering, said he will not depart from his principle of embracing diplomacy when commenting on national issues.
