DANISH INTELLIGENCE: RUSSIA IS LOSING HEAVILY AS ITS ECONOMY APPROACHES MAJOR CRISIS

Russia is suffering enormous personnel losses for only marginal territorial gains, while its wartime economy is “on the brink of a major crisis,” according to a new assessment from the Danish Defence Intelligence Service.

DDIS says the pressure is being driven by Russia’s military expenditure, international sanctions and Ukraine’s increasingly destructive long-range attacks against Russian energy infrastructure.

More than one million Russian military casualties have been reported since the full-scale invasion began, with some Western assessments placing the total significantly higher. Despite this expenditure of lives and equipment, Danish intelligence sees no prospect of Russia achieving a major breakthrough in Ukraine during the next six months.

The agency stressed that continued Western military and economic assistance remains essential to Ukraine’s ability to hold the front and raise the cost of the war for Moscow.

Pressure does not necessarily make the Kremlin less dangerous. DDIS expects Russia to intensify sabotage, destructive cyberattacks and other hybrid operations against Ukraine’s Western supporters. It also identifies a low but growing risk of a limited Russian attack against a NATO country intended to divide the alliance or divert resources away from Ukraine.

However, Danish intelligence has found no indication that Russia is currently preparing for a full-scale invasion of NATO territory.

The broader assessment is difficult for the Kremlin to conceal: Russia has sacrificed more than a million troops, distorted its economy around military production and accepted growing isolation—without breaking Ukraine’s defenses.

Putin can continue ordering men forward, but he cannot indefinitely escape the accumulating military, economic and political cost of his war.
